Understanding a treatment estimate
Know what you are agreeing to.
Start with your priorities.
Ask the practice for the proposed treatment, clinician, itemised estimate and expected stages in writing. Confirm which costs could change after an assessment.
Ask about the practical details.
Ask about alternatives, the effect of waiting, follow-up costs and what insurance confirmation means. A benefit estimate is not a guarantee of payment.
Keep the decision informed.
Take the time you need to ask questions. Keep financial consent distinct from understanding the clinical benefits, risks and alternatives.
Take these questions with you.
- What would a suitable assessment involve?
- What benefits, risks and alternatives should I understand?
- What will the appointments and follow-up cost?
- How will we review the plan and decide next steps?
